  • Eclectic and Disorganized Eating

If you follow an eclectic eating lifestyle, you tend to eat food outside your own home, eat a variety of ethnic and fast foods, and you tend to eat snack or desert foods when you are home. Eclectic eating patterns tend to become disorganized as food preparation falls to the bottom of the priority list. You may seldom cook proper meals at home. Instead, you bring home-prepared foods, or order from fast-food delivery services. Your home is stocked with snack foods. You may not have food preparation skills and dislike cooking at home. Your appetite regulation becomes disorganized. Addictive eating patterns increase. You experience strong cravings for high caloric foods. Excessive weight gain is a common consequence.

Many families with working parents eat prepackaged and fast foods routinely. They may sit at the dinner table together some of the time, but properly cooked home-prepared meals are unusual. The less affluent eclectic eater frequents fast food outlets and chain restaurants. This cuisine continues to feature burgers, fries, pizza, fried chicken, steaks, donuts, cookies, sandwiches, pop, orange juice, milkshakes, ice cream, and coffee. These are wheat-milk-beef foods with high fat and high sugar content. Tacos, yogurt, fruit drinks, and salads are slight improvements on the old themes. Cooked vegetables are usually scarce; salads are often minimal and poor quality. Lack of interest in eating proper foods, lack of money, illness, loneliness, and disruption of family groups all contribute to disorganization. Single, working people often do not know how to cook proper meals at home. They maintain a semblance of health, despite their poor eating habits, often associated with drinking and sometimes drug abuse. Eventually, they slip or avalanche into a dysfunctional state and often have food allergy symptoms with compulsive eating.

    Overweight Children

Eclectic eating by parents becomes the eating patterns of their children. The children do not feel well or act well. Some children become chronically ill.
Benjamin et al stated: "Rates of obesity in children continue to rise in the United States and abroad. Even among preschool-aged children the prevalence of obesity is alarmingly high, with 26.2% of children aged 2 through 5 years in the United States classified as either overweight or obese. Adverse health consequences include Type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, asthma and sleep apnea, early maturation, lower self-esteem. While there are genetic factors related to childhood obesity, diet and physical activity-related causes are modifiable and have therefore been targets of obesity prevention efforts and research. Intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and high fructose corn syrup are contributors to the obesity epidemic. Adult behaviors may interfere with a child's ability to respect hunger and satiety cues. There is some evidence that restrictive feeding and forcing children to eat are related to childhood obesity. Moreover, using food as a reward has a negative effect on children's weight status. Breastfeeding has a protective effect against later childhood and adolescent obesity. Strong evidence links childhood obesity to television viewing and low levels of physical activity in preschool-aged children… play is on the decline among children of all ages and may contribute to increases in sedentary activity and obesity. In the United States and in many other countries, a large percentage of young children are in some form of child care, and the amount of time children spend in child care each week has increased in recent years. Child care facilities may serve as home-away-from-home settings, where children adopt early nutrition, physical activity, and television viewing behaviors. Preschool children may consume up to 100% of their Recommended Dietary Allowances in child care settings, placing a great deal of responsibility on the child care facility to provide nutritionally adequate, healthful food ( and physical activity). Cook proper meals at home

The challenge to regain control of eating behaviors for disorganized eaters is obviously different from better-organized people. If you belong to the eclectic eaters group, organized or disorganized, your first task is to begin eating meals at home.

For many of our patients, recovery means a completely new lifestyle. They give up fast foods, stop eating from packages and start cooking normal food at home. New values emerge as they recover from the effects of years of eating bad food.

No one should claim that weight loss is easy, but weight management can be pursued in a rational manner with an expectation of success. First, you have to understand that the goal is not really weight loss. The goal is to become a smaller, leaner person and stay that way. The key phrase is "stay that way". A permanent change in food selection and eating behaviors is required for a permanent change in body weight. We like to think that successful weight management is a natural by-product of new healthy habits. A healthy lifestyle means that you feel and act well, you eat well, you exercise, stay in shape, and seek mind-body balance.
