From the Preface One the most popular themes in women’s magazines is weight loss. Women, more than men, struggle with weight concerns because appearance is a central issue of women’s lives. Men are not so preoccupied with appearance, but learn that there are health penalties to being overweight. There is no doubt that there are health penalties for being overweight and health benefits from losing weight. There is no doubt that a healthy concern to eat properly and remain physically fit is one the essential requirements for a healthy happy life. Excessive preoccupation with eating and weight control has become a problem for some women, however. For a precious few, eating is strongly inhibited from within and excessive weight loss becomes a health concern. The science of appetite, eating behaviors and weight control has advanced remarkably and is both complex and confusing. The science has not reached the practice of medicine or dietetics and professional advice given to overweight patients is either not helpful or is wrong. In the community at large, fantasy and fraud dominate weight loss commerce. Books, magazine articles and weight loss products combine to produce a marketing frenzy that persists and prevails over any rational understanding of weight issues. The Size of the ProblemEvery year, new weight-loss books appear on the bookstalls, and magazines run endless articles on the subject. It is easier to gain weight than to lose it. Dieters have proven that weight-loss attempts by following a "weight-loss diet" may succeed for a short time but ultimately fail, about 90% of the time. Hundreds of weight loss schemes have been marketed, some are sincere but flawed, and others are frankly fraudulent. This constant barrage of weight loss fantasy and fraud has become and integral part of the overweight problem. An essential part of the solution is to erase this book and product marketing nonsense from your mind, learn to adopt realistic goals and reasonable strategies of self-management. Research has shown several important features of body weight management. There are powerful biological controllers of eating behaviors, appetite and weight regulation. There are genetic tendencies toward excess weight and there may well be obesity genes. European and North American diets are flawed- there is too much fat and sugar in all the foods; food is too abundant; and eating has become entertainment. This is a bad idea if you want to stay slim. The modern lifestyle is flawed. There is too much sedentary activity, too much convenience and too little physical work. One of the first challenges you face is to abandon recreational eating in favor of recreational exercise USA stats reveal that the proportion of overweight children and adolescents increased 6 percent from 1980 to 1994 and in adults, the prevalence rose 9 percent, according to the US CDC. In Canada, the prevalence of obesity is lower than in the USA but has also increased from 1985 to 2001 to 14 per cent among women and 16 per cent among men. Forty per cent of Canadian men were overweight in 2001and 26 per cent of women .If this trend toward increasing numbers of obese children and adults continues into the 21st century; obesity will be the number one health concern. |
