We are often asked to compare Alpha Formulas with others on the market. Often there is no basis for comparison since the Alpha formulas are an elite group of elemental formulas designed to solve a long list of problems related to nutrition. Comparable formulas are rare and are not often available for retail sale in the US and Canada. If you can buy a nutrient formula off the shelf - it will not be in Alpha Nutrition's elite class of professional formulas. 

In many countries, meal replacement formulas are marketed. based on milk and soya proteins with added vitamins and minerals. These formulas are based on several assumptions that we question. Most of these formulas present problems for many users that the Alpha Nutrition Formulas resolve. Here is an example:

Revit-R is labeled as a "Complete Balanced Diet" and the instructions suggest it can be used as a meal replacement formula for oral and tube feeding. The nutrient values claimed on the label suggest that nutrient intake would meet RDA values if 440 Grams of the formula are consumed in one day. The energy value is 2000 calories; 61.8 % of the calories are supplied by carbohydrates - corn syrup solids and sucrose The protein requirement is supplied by Soya protein and Cow's milk proteins (sodium and calcium caseinate). These proteins are allergenic and in our opinion cause disease in a significant number of patients. Fat is provided by corn oil and medium chain triglycerides (MCT oil). 

Calcium is presented as  insoluble phosphates. Magnesium and zinc are presented in the insoluble oxide form. All three minerals are not likely to be absorbed, especially in patients with digestive tract disease.

Revit-R should not be used in several patient groups:

1. Diabetics should avoid this formula because of the high content sucrose and corn syrup solids (made up of sucrose, glucose, and starch).
2. Celiacs and others with gluten allergy should avoid this formula because of malt extract.
3. Patients with cow's milk allergy should avoid this formula because of the caseinate content.
4. Patients with corn allergy should avoid this formula because of corn syrup solids and corn oil.
5. Patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis should avoid this formula because milk proteins and corn are high-risk foods.

Alpha DMX is specially formulated for diabetics who must avoid the concentrated sugar intake associated with sucrose, glucose and starch.

Alpha ENF and PMX are safe and effective for patients with inflammatory bowel disease, short guts and malabsorption due to pancreatic insufficiency and bowel disease.

One of the therapeutic secrets of Alpha ENF, Alpha PMX and Alpha DMX is the avoidance of proteins or peptides. Proteins are the most reactive molecules in food allergic disease. Staple foods such as milk, eggs, wheat, corn, soya and meat contain proteins that frequently cause immune responses and are the basic problem in delayed patterns of food allergy.

Meal replacement formulas, liquid diets and protein powders sold as "body-building" supplements can be a source of trouble. Protein powders are often made from cheap proteins such as milk protein (casein, caseinates, whey), egg white (albumin), soya proteins, or hydrolyzed vegetable proteins. Hydrolyzed proteins are only partially digested and retain allergenic properties. In addition small peptides have physiological properties and may cause unexpected problems both the digestive tract and in the whole body.

Alpha ENF and Alpha PMX avoid all the protein problems by providing a balanced set of pure l-form amino acids - the real nutrients derived from proteins by digestion of food. Amino acids do not trigger immune responses and are therefore hypoallergenic. Free amino acids are more expensive than protein powders, but freeing the immune system from protein challenge is well worth the cost.

Diabetics

Alpha DMX is carbohydrate and fat free. Alpha DMX is the only formula available that provides a complete nutrient set with no caloric intake.
